I spent my weekend paring down my digital footprint. I killed my old site and redirected the URL to Tumblr, unsubscribed from countless newsletters, group deals, innumerable group deal spinoffs, sale announcements, where-to-eat emails, and deleted my accounts on an assortment of social platforms that will not reach mass adoption.
Privacy aside, there are a multitude of reasons why I did this. Perhaps the most important is that I want my digital footprint to mirror my real-world social network — that is, I want my engagement in the digital space to be focused and meaningful. I operate the same way with my friends. I’d rather spend all day with one good friend than chop my day into four, three-hour blocks to jam more people in. To each her own, but I personally find that kind of time to be far more impactful. Same story in the digital space. Less is so much more.
I still have a ton of HTML/CSS work I’d like to do to this site/Tumblr in coming weeks. I’m fairly determined to do that work myself (hello Lynda) but it’ll probably be slow-going. If things look effed, please bear with me.
The final reason why I wanted to pare down is because I’d really like to do more personal writing in coming months. I’m way out of practice. So out of practice that I skimmed my dog-eared copy of The Elements of Style for the 3,000th time this weekend. That book is nigh perfect, especially for those of us looking to perfect the craft of a simple, declarative sentence.
The violins. Gorgeous.
